My cd/dvd drive used to work just fine. It was only recently it stopped reading disks alltogether. It opens up and spins the disks, but the drives no longer appear even on the "My Computer" screen. I'm using the most recent version of Vista. Any help concerning this issue (will I need a new driver/where do I find one?) would be greatly appreciated.

If you need a driver try at manufacturers website. And also check in your Control panel -> Device manager and try to see if your CD/DVD drive is listed there and is it working properly. You can also check there the status of your drivers.

This problem is more than likely not a software issue.CD/DVD drivers are very basic and every operating system has default drivers that will work for them.If it is not showing up in "my computer" then it is either physically malfunctioning, or something is wrong with the cable or the controller.Try plugging the drive in with a different cable, or to a different port on the motherboard. If it is ATA/IDE try a different cable for sure.

My Gateway did the same thing. I ended up taking it to a shop as it was under warranty. It ended up being a software issue. They had to do something with the registry.
