This would depend on your budget. How much do you have to spend?
Are you going to be gaming at all?

Motherboard/CPU combos range anywhere form $75-$700.

For a budget I would go with:

Asus M2N-MX SE Motherboard and AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Processor 2.20GHz CPU. about $75-$80

For a much faster gaming unit (if you don't care what you spend):

Asus P5K3 Deluxe WiFi Motherboard and Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor 2.40GHz CPU. About $570- $600.

Prices as of Oct 2007.

I know this post is a little dated, but, may aid others who find it.
In older system, boards, and, their contacts, do oxidize, cleaning and re-seating sometimes helps.
But, your BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) issue is most likely the result of an error in Windows Registry, caused by a virus, malware, or, a driver that's no longer needed or used, basically, remnants of programs, that were not completely removed. If you had a Restore Points set up prior to the crash, try those first. If not, general clean up with Defrag & Regclean, are the next option, done in safe mode.

If that still fails, and, if there's nothing of real value on the system, a Clean Install, will cure the software issues. But, If there's material you wish to save, there are several Linux version, that would allow you to mount the Hard Drive, on another system, to pull these files from.

Most or Windows Errors, are widely know. If you can catch & read the Error Code, that appears when the BSOD occurs, you can Google that code, & most likely find both the reason for the issue.
