I have an Explorer 4200 cable TV box with RCA jacks, RF coax and an S-video port, and a Gateway 900W LCD computer monitor with both DVI and VGA ports. Is there any way of connecting the cable box to the monitor with simple cables, or will it require an expensive converter of some kind?

Just call your cable TV company and ask for a digital HD cable box. Most cable companies like Time Warner, Comcast, Cox, Cablevision, etc. all offer free upgrades to an HD cable box. These digital HD cable boxes usually have either a DVI or HDMI output port, which you can connect to any HDCP-compliant LCD Monitor. (Yes, DVI is compatible with HDMI). This works most of the time.If by some chance this doesn't work, then start thinking about spending money for a converter or something.Hope this helps.

you have two options: 1.expensive converter option2. get a new set top box with hdmi out and then you can purchase a hdmi to dvi cable/adapter and then hook up your audio using the old rca jacks or maybe a coaxial or optical cord.Note: DVI does not support audio.
