I have a desktop and a wireless router. I just moved in college dorm and i have to configure the ip address to access internet on my desktop. I only got one ip address given by dorm staff. I'm able to connect to internet on desktop but connecting to router it will not spread wireless internet. How to allow my desktop to share internet to my wireless router?

Enter the configuration page on your wireless router, and assign the IP given to you by dorm staff as a fixed WAN ip in the router. Then either use a fixed IP or DHCP on for the computer on your now-local network. The wireless router should then act as a gateway for your wireless network.

connect the cable to your wireless and configure the device. else go to your internet connection and share it but you will need to have a wireless dongle or a second netowrk card to connect to your device.

It would be easier if you hook your wireless router directly from the source then connect your desktop to the router via ethernet cable. This way, you don't need to always have your desktop on if you want to share your wireless connection to other wireless devices.Configure your router to obtain IP address automatically so you don't need to worry about using the IP address given to you. The router will automatically pick it up.

I assume you have a wired connection from a plug in the dorm room. You may not really have to do anything. Run an ethernet wire from the wall network plug to your router's WAN port. Then run a second wire from one of the four LAN ports to your computer. Use that connection to set up the router's SSID and security code. Then give the computer the ssid and security code through the wifi icon on the toolbar. That should do it. The router will accept the IP address from the school network automatically. You will have to remove that IP address from your computer if you set up a fixed address. You may also have to follow the school's instructions to set up a proxy in your browser depending on how the school has the internet connection set up.
