Canada auctions jewelry, underwear

OTTAWA, (UPI) -- A Canadian government auction site for seized and surplus property includes jewelry, musical instruments, "Superman" pajamas and underwear.

The auction site, run by Public Works and Government Services Canada, opened to visitors in January 2009 and a department spokeswoman said it generated more than $13 million in profits during the last fiscal year, the Toronto Star reported Monday.

The site, which officials said was aimed at gaining a wider audience for government auctions, lists items including diamond-studded jewelry, a tuba, a box of "Superman" pajamas, a hair clipper set and a non-working 1994 Lincoln Town Car.

The auctions also feature "Care Bears" underwear for girls as well as underwear for adults.

The spokeswoman said privacy laws prevent officials from revealing the origins or destinations of the items.
