Classmates object to food fight penalties

WEBSTER, N.Y., (UPI) -- Classmates of three New York state high school seniors facing disorderly conduct charges following a food fight said the students were unfairly targeted.

Webster Schroeder students protested Tuesday outside the school, one day before Andrew Knapp, 18, Hannah Orsino, 17, and Lindsey Weidenborner, 17, appeared in Webster Town Court on the disorderly conduct charges, The (Rochester, N.Y.) Democrat & Chronicle reported Thursday.

Court officials said three students will likely have the charges dismissed if they complete 12 hours of community service, but they also received penalties from the school for the June 10 incident including suspension for the rest of the year and bans from attending class events. The three may also be barred from walking at their June 27 graduation.

The protesting students said a sizable portion of the senior class was involved in the food fight and the three students were unfairly singled out and punished too harshly for a prank that did not cause any injuries or property damage.

"I think it was wrong to single those three out," senior Brian Lai said. "Sure, they started it, but it was going to happen anyway. Everybody was ready for it."
