Ducks bring freeway traffic to halt
ORANGE, Calif., (UPI) -- Highway patrol officers in Southern California say they needed help recently with a traffic jam -- a mother duck and six ducklings in traffic lanes.
As animal control workers headed for the freeway Friday night, California Highway Patrol officers were able to escort the mallard duck and her offspring to the side of the freeway out of traffic, The Los Angeles Times reported.
"They were able to coerce them over to the side of the road," Ryan Drabek, director of Orange County Animal Control, said.
The ducks were taken from the 55 Freeway in Orange, Calif., to a nearby pond behind a shopping center.
"The closest location we can release them, the better," Drabek said.
Drabek said the mother probably was looking for water, and said anyone seeing ducks in danger should call animal control officials.
"You know, springtime," Drabek said. "There's a lot of momma ducks."
