Festival aims for pirate record
VALLEJO, Calif., (UPI) -- Organizers of the NorCal Pirates Festival in California say they believe they have set a world record for most pirate-garbed people in one place.

Shannon Damnavits, a spokeswoman for the Vallejo festival, said an estimated 2,300 pirates were photographed according to Guinness World Records rules and organizers are confident they beat the record of 1,744 set in Brixham, England, The (Vallejo) Times-Herald reported Monday.

Damnavits said an official count is forthcoming and will be submitted to Guinness as a new record.

The pirates were among the more than 18,000 people who visited the first day of the festival Saturday, with other activities including pirate-themed food, sword fight demonstrations and sea shanty performances.
