How to use textures in Adobe photoshop as a coloring method?

I see many people mixing textures with their drawings. all the tutorials I've watched until now are on how to apply the texture on the whole page, not a part of it. I want to use textures for coloring a specific place in the pic, like using it for the hair, the cloths, and so on. I have adobe photoshop CS5, but it doesn't matter really, I just want the idea. Thanks in advance.

If you want to apply patterns in an advanced mode you have to be able to use well the various selections tools, because to apply a pattern to a specific part of a layer you have to select it first. For this needs I prefer to use the magnetic or the polygonal lasso, but if you have a spot of plain color to select, then the magic wand can be the right tool to use. When the selection is done you can go to the Layer palette and click on the Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer button (one of the small buttons at the foot of the palette) and then select Pattern. Now just choose the pattern you prefer and it's done. Some help about the Selection tools:http://www.tutorial9.net/photoshop/the-selection-tools/
