Iran wants to supply power to Iraq
SANANDAJ, Iran, (UPI) -- Iran has the potential to supply the Kurdish electricity market with as much as 1,000 megawatts of power, Iranian executives said.

Mohommad Mostafa Najafian, the managing director of the utility company in Iran's Kurdistan province, said he was ready to help boost the electrical capacity of his neighbors in Iraq's Sulamaniyah province.

"At present, we have the possibility for selling and transferring 500 to 1,000 MW of electricity with the voltage of 20,000 watts to the ... market in Iraq," he was quoted in the semiofficial Fars News Agency as saying.

The director made his comments during economic meetings with utility delegates from Iraq.

Majid Namjou, the Iranian energy minister, said several countries joined the list of potential consumers of Iranian electricity during talks in February.

He said with several deals under consideration with Azerbaijan and Russia, his country could emerge as an energy hub for Europe.

"Iran exchanges electricity with most of its neighbors and many of them are interested in increasing their electricity exchange with Iran," the minister said at the time.
