    Question HP PhotosmartC4780

My HP Photosmart C4780 is printing well, but once in a while it makes noise. It seems to be resetting itself for no reason. The noise is similar to that which is made when one has changed an ink cartridge. Is this a sign that the printer is developing a mechanical problem? So far, the printer is working fine, but this occasional resetting is worrisome. I tried turning the printer completely off for 12 hours, but that did not help.

How often do you use it? Have you tried running any cleaning cycles? What kinds of documents do you typically print? Exactly what kinds of noises is it making humming, clicking?

Inkjet printers don't last very long and 4.5 year is a good run. Did you get good use out of it? If it is just making the standard sounds, it probably just going an automatic print head cleaning.

First thanks to all those who responded to my query.

I went to the utility window and printed a test page today. It came out fine. I did notice, however, that the black ink cartridge is low, and when I tried to print something recently, it came out blue. I wonder if the computer is using a lot of ink when making those odd sounds. I plan to replace the black cartridge later. I use the printer nearly every day, but usually print under ten pages. I print short documents, receipts, etc. The noises I hear are similar, if not identical, to those made by the printer when a new cartridge is installed. I had an old Epson printer once that used a lot of ink when cleaning itself. I wonder if this is what is happening with the HP. But why is it doing this all by itself? I am wondering if the printer itself is all right, but maybe I need to reinstall the software. Can one do that with an old printer?
