INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Former Indianapolis 500 driver Bob Christie has died. He was 85.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway said Wednesday that the eight-time Indy starter had been in ill health recently and died Monday in his hometown of Grants Pass, Ore.

Christie began racing stock cars in AAA and the U.S. Auto Club and started at Indianapolis each year from 1956 to 1963. His best finish at Indy was 10th in 1960, and he finished 13th in three other races.

One of his best performances was third behind Jim Rathmann and Rodger Ward in a USAC National Championship stock car race at the then-new Daytona International Speedway in 1959.
