ST. LOUIS, (UPI) -- Ryan Ludwick slammed a three-run homer and Adam Wainwright hurled seven strong innings Monday in the St. Louis Cardinals' 9-3 win over Seattle.

Ludwick's clout in the first inning erased an early 2-0 deficit and gave St. Louis a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Ludwick ended the night with four RBI and Albert Pujols went 3-for-3 with a run driven in to help the Cards to only their second win in eight games.

Wainwright (9-4) tossed an effective game, allowing three runs on six hits. He issued one walk and fanned six in the inter-league contest, raising his Busch Stadium record this season to 7-0.

The Cards pulled to within one game of first-place Cincinnati in the National League Central standings.

Luke French (0-1) absorbed a loss in his first major league start this season and Ichiro Suzuki socked a solo homer among his two hits for Seattle.
