Yankees sign No. 1 draft pick Culver
NEW YORK, (UPI) -- Switch-hitting teenage shortstop Chris Culver, the New York Yankees' top pick in this year's draft, has signed a contract with the American League East leaders.
The 17-year-old Rochester, N.Y., native hit .561 with nine home runs and 38 RBI in 22 games in his senior year of high school.
"We are very excited to get [Culver] signed so quickly and get him out on the field to begin his development as a major league prospect," Damon Oppenheimer, Yankees vice president of amateur scouting, said of the 32nd player chosen overall in the draft of first-year players.
The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle cited an ESPN.com blog as saying Culver signed for a $940,000 bonus.
The last time the Yankees picked a high school shortstop in the first round was 1992 when they took Derek Jeter.
