ST. LOUIS, (UPI) -- Adam Wainwright allowed only one unearned run over eight innings Saturday and the St. Louis Cardinals hung on for a 4-3 inter-league victory over Oakland.

Wainwright (10-4) scattered five hits, walking only one and striking out four. It was the 13th time in 15 starts the Cardinals' right-hander has given up three runs or fewer this season. The only run he yielded came in the first inning on catcher Yaddier Molina's error.

The Cards almost blew it in the ninth, however, when Ryan Sweeney got an RBI single off Ryan Franklin and pinch-hitter Gabe Gross pulled the A's to within a run with a run-scoring hit off Jason Motte.

Matt Holiday homered and drove in three runs and Skip Schumaker chipped in with two hits and an RBI for St. Louis.

Oakland's Ben Sheets (2-7) was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits and four walks as the A's dropped their seventh game in eight tries.
