Report: Knicks, Stoudemire close to deal
NEW YORK, (UPI) -- The New York Knicks were close to signing center-forward Amare Stoudemire Friday after he broke off talks with the Phoenix Suns, sources said.

Citing "a person involved in the talks," The New York Times reported the Knicks have offered the eight-year veteran center-forward a $100 million contract.

The chances of his signing with New York reportedly jumped when Stoudemire stopped talking with Phoenix and his former team responded by quickly reaching an agreement with another power forward, Hakim Warrick.

"It wasn't the right deal," Stoudemire's agent, Happy Walters, told The Arizona Republic. "He'll be sad to leave his teammates and the city he loves but it's time to move on."

The Times said an agreement with Stoudemire could be used by the Knicks to convince other star free agents, such as LeBron James and Dwayne Wade, that they could win if they came to New York.
