MIAMI (AFP) – The Miami Heat easily won their National Basketball Association home opener as Dwyane Wade led the charge with 26 points in a 96-70 thrashing of the Orlando Magic.
The Heat flashed their offence and showed a dominating defence that held Orlando to just four-of-24 shooting from the three point line.
LeBron James had 15 points, seven assists and six rebound while the third cog in their dynamic trio, Chris Bosh, chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Magic star centre Dwight Howard battled foul trouble in the second half and finished with 19 points and seven rebounds. Howard fouled out with 5:41 left and missed all three of his shots in the second half.
Jameer Nelson had 10 points on three-of-11 shooting for the Magic, who shot 30.4 percent overall.
The Heat outscored Orlando 28-10 in the third quarter, with James and Wade combining to hit three three-pointers to begin the half.
It marked Miami's sixth win over the Magic in their last 21 meetings.
In Boston, Rajon Rondo had a triple-double with a career-high 24 assists, and Paul Pierce scored 25 points with 14 rebounds to lead the Celtics to a 105-101 victory over the New York Knicks.
Rondo bettered his regular-season personal best of 18 assists set against Sacramento seven months ago, but fell short of the franchise record of 28 set by Bob Cousy in 1959. Rondo also had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Amare' Stoudemire scored 27 points and reserve Wilson Chandler had 19 points for the Knicks. Landry Fields had 11 points and 10 rebounds in New York's first loss after winning its opener two nights ago.
