Former NFL star guilty of rape

CHARLESTON, S.C., -- A former National Football League star has been convicted of rape by a Charleston, S.C., jury and sentenced to 30 year in prison, authorities said.
David Meggett was found guilty of burglary and rape Wednesday in connection with a January 2009 attack inside a North Charleston home, the (Charleston) Post and Courier reported.
Meggett, who played for the New York Giants, the New England Patriots and the New York Jets in a career lasting from 1989 to 1998, was at one time the NFL's career leading punt returner.
Meggett's attorney said the sex was consensual and the verdict would be appealed.
The former football player didn't testify in the court case.
Meggett also faces charges in a September 2008 incident in which a teenager told police she met Meggett through a mutual friend and he allegedly forced to her have sex at a Charleston home after inviting her to breakfast.
Prosecutors say they aren't sure if they will pursue that case, the Post and Courier reported.
