Ergen is richest Coloradan

Denver Business Journal

Denver satellite TV magnate Charlie Ergen and financier Phil Anschutz once again topped the list of Coloradans on Forbes’ magazine’s 400 Richest Americans list.

But the gap between Ergen and Anschutz’s estimated wealth narrowed. Ergen, 55, the founder of EchoStar Corp. (NASDAQ: SATS), was estimated to be worth $8.1 billion in 2008, down from an estimated $10.2 billion in 2007. That placed him at No. 35 on Forbes’ list, and No. 1 in Colorado.

Shares of TV program provider Dish Network are down 25 percent since a spinoff from EchoStar in January, Forbes noted; Ergen runs both companies.

Meanwhile, Anschutz, 68, the founder of Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q), is now worth $8 billion, up from $7.6 billion in 2007, according to Forbes estimates. He is ranked No. 36 on the Forbes 400 and is the second-wealthiest person in Colorado.

James Leprino, 70, head of Leprino Foods — the world’s leading producer of mozzarella and pizza cheese — and John Malone, 67, chairman of Liberty Media Corp., are now both worth $2.3 billion, Forbes estimates. They tied for the No. 190 spot on the Forbes 400 and are the third- and fourth-richest Coloradans.

Malone’s fortune dipped a bit, from $2.4 billion last year, while Leprino’s rose from $2.1 billion last year.

Pat Stryker, 52, granddaughter of the founder of Stryker Corp., a medical technology company, came in 262nd on Forbes’ overall list and fifth in Colorado. She is worth $1.8 billion, the same as last year, Forbes estimates.

Rounding out this year’s list is Thomas Marsico, 53, founder of Marsico Capital Management. He’s worth $1.5 billion, the same as last year, Forbes estimates. That puts him No. 317 on the Forbes 400, and sixth in Colorado.
