DMC's camp offers get-away for foster kids
PEEKSKILL, N.Y., Rap pioneer Darryl McDaniels of Run DMC says his camp for foster kids helps youngsters form necessary personal bonds with others.

McDaniels, co-founder of Camp Felix, said he wanted to provide a place where children from derailed families could talk about it with peers from similar situations.

"These kids say: 'I am just a foster kid. I have nothing going for me other than just being miserable,'" McDaniels told the New York Daily News. "I tell them, 'You are wrong. Your situation doesn't define who you are.'"

McDaniels has a degree of insight into foster kids. He was adopted when he was 5 years old. The other camp co-founder, television casting director Shelia Jaffee, is an adoptee as well, the Daily News said Sunday.

Camp Felix was formed in 2006 and this summer hosted more than 170 campers in Peekskill. It has been drawing support from celebrities including actors Mark Wahlberg and Lorraine Bracco.
