This is a short review in general of the 2005 series of the Sci-Fi show Doctor Who.
Doctor Who is a British television series set in the United Kingdom. It features a character that goes by the name “The Doctor”. Some of the villains of the show include Daleks, Cybermen, The Master, the Angels, to name a few.

My Take On Doctor Who:
That other description was not very descriptive; very general. I would like to go more in-depth in my description for the purpose of review.
The show is based on a man, a Time Lord, who stole a Tardis (Time And Relative Dimension In Space), and travels throughout space and time. Along his journeys, he takes on a companion (or two) for a while and they have some scary, wonderful, life-altering adventures. Every now and again, the Doctor is injured to the point where he must regenerate, this causing him to look very different and allows a new actor to play the part.
In this new series, there have been a total of 3 Doctors, this latest one being the 11th Doctor.
The series started with Christopher Eccleston as The (9th) Doctor, who then met up purely by accident (or so it would seem) with a young woman named Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). Rose ends up being The Doctor’s companion for the first 2 seasons. Season 1 is where we first meet Captain Jack Harkness played by John Barrowman. Captain Jack is a recurring character throughout the series. At the end of season 1, and into the Christmas episode just before season 2, we are introduced to a new Doctor, this time portrayed by David Tennant. David continues on as The (10th) Doctor until the end of season 4. At the end of season 2, we say goodbye to Rose. Season 3, we meet The Doctor’s new companion, Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman). Martha, student doctor, is a wonderful partnership for The Doctor. By season 4, we have Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), taking her place at The Doctor’s side. Season 5, in steps a new Doctor once again, this time played by Matt Smith. And along with a new (11th) Doctor, comes a new companion, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), only this time, it’s not just one companion The Doctor takes on. At first it is, but Amy’s fiancé Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) joins in on the fun and becomes a second companion to The Doctor. These 2 companions stay with the doctor for seasons 5 and 6. By the end of season 6, The Doctor has dropped off Amy and Rory to no longer have them as his companions.
Now, throughout this time, there has been another recurring character in the series and her name is River Song (Alex Kingston). River is quite the character, an archaeologist, a criminal, and much much more. She is always meeting up with The Doctor in reverse order; what’s happened already for her has yet to happen to The Doctor. Her catch-phrase is “Spoilers!”. I can’t really say much more than that in this general review of the show. I will go further in-depth on her (and the other characters), in individual episode reviews.
Likes And Dislikes Of The Doctors:
My favorite Doctor in this series so far, would have to be the 10th Doctor, David Tennant. He is funny, very likeable, and carries the cheese and corn of the show quite well. (Who says cheese and corn can’t go together?) It would have been nice to keep David Tennant on as The Doctor for more seasons, but in the Doctor Who world, that just doesn’t happen. He had a good run with 3 seasons plus a bunch of specials. In the Doctor Who tradition, unfortunately, he had to regenerate. Second in line, for likeable Doctor would have to be the 9th Doctor, Christopher Eccleston. He’s funny in a very serious way, and plays The Doctor from a different perspective than the others. He’s the straight-man in the comedy routine. Very likeable, and it would have been nice to see him for 1 more season before changing Doctors. As for the 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, I can’t say I liked him at the beginning of his seasons as The Doctor. He just seemed very awkward and out of place as The Doctor. I didn’t get the feeling that he belonged in Doctor Who. But then, after a few episodes, and then a few more, Matt as The Doctor really grows on you. I got to like him, but I’m ready for a change. Anxiously awaiting what’s to come in the coming season(s). I am hoping that we will see a 12th Doctor in this 7th season. Matt Smith has had 2 seasons already under his belt, with a 3rd on the way, and again, in Doctor Who, a change can happen at ANY time.
The Companions:
Let’s just go in order for this one. Let’s start with Rose. W meet Rose in “Rose”. I like Rose, she’s a great character and compliments The Doctor tremendously. Billie Piper plays the role quite well. She sticks around for the first 2 seasons and she gets to experience 2 looks for The Doctor. More on Rose in individual episode reviews; I wouldn’t want to spoil anything too much.
Martha Jones. Martha is a medical student at a hospital when she meets up with The Doctor. Episode entitled “Smith and Jones”. She learns quite quickly that anything having to do with The Doctor is quite adventure-packed, but she makes the decision to join him anyway. I like Martha, not as much as I like Rose, but she’s great just the same. Nothing too exciting or outstanding with Martha, and because of this, my least favorite companion so far. Martha only sticks around as companion for 1 season, then has a secondary role later on.
Donna Noble is probably one of my favorites as companions go. I would probably have to say that I’d put her at the top of my favorite list of companions to date. We first meet Donna in the Christmas special “The Runaway Bride”, but she doesn’t join The Doctor as his companion until Season 4 “Partners in Crime”. Donna is funny, mouthy, bold, and just doesn’t care what anyone thinks. She is outspoken but she pulls it off. Sadly, Donna had to be left behind by The Doctor after only 1 season, as he went on his way, as he often does. I would have loved to see more Donna episodes. But, this IS the Doctor Who world, so, everyone changes, and often too.
Amy (Amelia) Pond, and her boyfriend Rory Williams. The Doctor doesn’t usually take on 2 companions, but this time things were a little bit different. Circumstances being what they were (which will be discussed in individual reviews) caused this to be so. Amy, which The Doctor encountered when she was just a child, has come back and now once again is in her life. I like Amy. She’s a Scottish red-head and she doesn’t take guff from anyone and is quite bossy when it comes to Rory. Rory is a nurse and loves Amy to death. They make a great pair and get to star for 2 seasons. We first meet Amy and Rory in episode “The Eleventh Hour”. The pair share many great episodes together and I must say, have a VERY interesting connection written in for their characters that has been intertwined throughout the series thus far.
What’s To Come:
Well, to be honest, I am anxiously awaiting the newest season of Doctor Who. Season 7 is scheduled to air in November of 2012 last I read, and I am looking forward to seeing who the new companion will be. I am also looking forward to finding out if they will be changing actors for The Doctor this season. We’ll have to wait and see.
Overall:
The general thought on Doctor Who (2005), would have to be, I love it. It’s a wonderful show chock full of great little tidbits of humor, truth, fantasy, and life-altering events.
Is this show Preferred By Pete? YES, this show is highly recommended for any Sci-Fi fan.
