Amtrak has sued the trucking company that owned a tractor-trailer rig involved in a crash last week that killed six people and injured dozens of others.

The passenger rail service, which is partly owned by the U.S. government, filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Nevada on Wednesday, claiming the John Davis Trucking Company was negligent.

A spokeswoman for the John Davis Trucking Company referred calls to a Nevada-based attorney who could not immediately be reached for comment.

An Amtrak spokesman declined to comment, saying the lawsuit spoke for itself.

The driver of the tractor-trailer rig apparently ignored or failed to see signs, flashing lights and signal arms before slamming into the side of the California Zephyr train on Friday at a crossing of U.S. Route 95, about 70 miles east of Reno.

The driver was killed in the collision, along with the train's conductor and at least four other people. Dozens of passengers were injured, at least one critically.

A team of National Transportation Safety Board investigators is working to determine the cause of the accident but have said it may take as long as a year to reach a formal conclusion.
