- A boy died Thursday when he was hit by a tree while walking through the woods with his mother in a Philadelphia suburb, police said.

Police in Upper Providence described the death of the 5-year-old as a tragic accident, The Times Herald of Montgomery County reported. In a news release, police said the boy, his mother and brother were on a trail near Perkiomen Creek in Collegeville at about 5 p.m. when a tree suddenly came down on top of him.

The boy's identity had not been released late Thursday.

A woman who lives in the area told KYW-TV, Philadelphia, she saw a police officer emerge from the woods with the boy in his arms. The boy was pronounced dead at Phoenixville Hospital.
