Police and child protective services in Texas were investigating the case of a 4-year-old boy who apparently was fatally mauled by a dog.

Kyler Johnson disappeared from his Victoria home Sunday evening while his dad, Cole Johnson, 28, was outside cleaning a car. The boy was found dead about 11 a.m. Monday less than a half mile away in a neighbor's yard with injuries consistent with a dog attack, the San Antonio (Texas) Express-News reported Monday.

Chief Deputy Terry Simmons said it appeared the boy wandered into the yard of a neighbor who had several dogs that "were restrained in a way that they wouldn't be able to get out."

"Family members said the child really loved animals," Simmons added.

He said it appeared as though only one dog, a pit bull or pit bull mix, was responsible for the attack. An autopsy was scheduled to determine if the boy died from the dog attack, the newspaper said.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services had investigated alleged abuse and lack of supervision of the child by someone other than Cole Johnson in 2010, the newspaper said. No evidence was found to support the accusation or a second allegation of physical abuse that was made a month later.
