First of all, there are 3 types of satellite's inm orbit.

1. Cband - Big mesh dishes, 6 foor to 15 foot. 15 Channels fer Satellite, 1 channel per transponder.

2. KU Band - Stronger reception, stronger sending signal and can be used with smaller dishes from 32" to 18" . This band of sat uses multiple channels per transponder. KU band breaks down into 2 categories.......

2-1 - Circular - This sub band of KU is used only for D!sh, b3v and Dtv. This circular band is ONLY for pay sats in orbit. The signal from these are the strongest and require the smallest dishes. Typicaly 18" to 24"....

2-2 - Linier - This sub band is free for everyone to use. Altho it does have some encrypted channels and some can be unloced useing Globcast on your Viewsat. (If you ever wondered what globecast was :) Free sats on this band are weaker signal, they MUST require a dish with a MIN of 32" and a linier LNB. The difference between a lnb for D!sh and linier is the Frequency they operate on. A universal linier lnb works great for all linier frequency's. If you even wanted to go High tech, Invacom makes a quad LNB (has 4 outputs, 2 linier and 2 circular) and one lnb can get everything in the KU band.

Here is a List of sats in the KU band

WildBlue-1
WildBlue-1 is a purpose-built satellite built for use by the WildBlue service exclusively. It has 35 spot beams in the Ka-band. WildBlue-1, was launched on December 8, 2006 at 22:07 GMT aboard an Arianespace Ariane 5. WildBlue-1 is an LS-1300 was built by Space Systems/Loral and occupies the 111.0° W slot. WildBlue-1 is effectively co-located with Anik-F2, thus increasing service capacity without requiring customers to re-aim satellite antennas.

Solidaridad II
belongs to the second generation of Mexican satellites and offers a total of 48 equivalent transponders in C and Ku-Bands with the following coverage:

C-Band: Mexico, South of the USA, Caribbean, Central and South America
Ku-Band: Mexico, Eastern coast of the USA, San Francisco and Los Angeles

Terms -

Feeds - are a live camera that news casters use to send life news to you. Before they setup you can watch all the pre-editing and the setup of the set. it's kinds fun especialy with court tv :) Hahaha..

PAY - for birds with encryption, There is 4 main encryptions in North America. Niagra2 (B3v D!sh), Digicypher (Starchoice), Power VU (pay per use system and C band) and globecast (viewsat supports globecast)

Bird - A satellite in the sky

Locals - Tv stations have sister stations they use to send some programing to them. Such as movies / sports events and general programing

Aiming to these birds is just like aiming to D!sh or b3v but a much larger dish is required as stated above. Also all the birds listed above have different operating frequencies. In your viewsat goto for example gal. 10r. You will have no signal on it due to your LNB. When the right LNB and switch is setup then you move the lnb freq. down or up until you see signal. Then aim until you get quality. NOTE not all birds in the sky send out a LOCK so you will see quality but the reciever will not tell you which bird you are on. Transponders on these birds changes all the itme so this is why your reciever has a blind scan. The main channels such as the networks don't move.

Any questions please reply and i'm here to help.

BTW dish motors work well with FTA setups.

Hey Thanks for this information. i know that I have tinkered with several things on just the d**h system have found many other channels that were very interesting.
I have found that sometimes when I can't get certain channels to come in I change the ports on ther diseqc and get recetion. I am not reallt sure what happens here but it works.

why is Dreambox works, and the rest don't?

Not entirely true. Dreambox uses a soft cam and dreambox is linux based. a DVB card will also work. with a soft cam the software emulates a stock card, or better known as a cam. This method of testing is very close to programing the orgial cards like the old DTV systems.

That usualy happens when the LNB settings are not 100% right for your system. If they differ just a little bit you can actually loose some channels when you do your channel scan.

I thought Starchoice used Linear rather than circular LNB frequency? If you had a Choice dish pointed at the bird would you get anything?

Is it possible to test StarCho!ce with the FTA receivers such as ViewSat or PanSat?

No it is not. Now starcho!ce does have "free" channels and sometime they have a free preview of channels that will come in.

Brief history lesson...

Once a pon a time there was c-band. Cband runs a board called a Digicypher and Digicyper-2. Digicyper runs on a binary tier system such as B3v and D!sh. It has codes and hits numbers called keys. So it was testable back in the day and to this day is still testable and very very stable. Digicyper-2 runs on software based like the old DTV cards. Only testable is the keys are broken to unlock the software to re-write the sub's. So there is the 2 major types of encryption.

B3v and d!sh were orginaly digicypher and ran off of the old KU-linier birds in teh sky. As b3v grew (cicra 1995) they switched to a new form of encryption called Niagravision. D!sh followed suit and soon Starcho!ce was born takes over the old b3v birds and useing there old encryption. In the early years the new niagravision was told to be un-hackable and soon after that b3v had baterycards to open them up. A rather crude form of hack that married the card to the orginal b3v reciever. Back then keys only changed once or twice a year. An eprom had to be programed in order to change the keys putting this form of test out of the hand of the everyday joe. back then there was no ECM or Sub 7 commands. What unlocked B3v unlocked
d!sh well.

After that AVR's come onto the market. Avr was again a married subbut was programable with jkeys to re-write the keys on your own. At this time ECM's starting showing up and would change your reciever Loc. id to "1" (only letting you see one channel, the hacked channel) and since the providers owned the software on teh recievers they can change them.

Next in this order was Rom3, rom10 and then POOF! FTA (rom3 and 10 cards are the orgianl pastic) now the unlocking of the rom3 and 10 led to the creation on fta. Fta was always arounf even before this but programers discovered by changeing the software on these recievers they unlocked pay channels. **** So in no way where fta recievers made back then for testing at all ****

One year later Niagravision was dead and a new card showed up. Rom 101 and 103. D!sh and b3v did the exact same thing. Everything was down for 8 monthes until hacker unlocked the software in the rom 101 card. POOF! testing was up once again for d!sh but b3v ran rom 103. Same idea of a system but different software. B3v was testable 4 monthes later and then fast forward to present day.

Notice i have no mention of digicypher? The main reason is digicypher has no card use. It's an eprom on a chip and a software based system. This means no keys and is not hackable. Like the new Direct TV cards.

BTW: old DTV cards were testable becasue they were made by a company called NDS. NDS has employee's that leaked the source code and make millions doing it. new dtv cards are no longer made my NDS :)

Key Systems can be opened and hacked. Software are a little harder due to there nature. Kesy system always run on sets of numbers. That is how they set you subscription. the master key is the one listed here but pay keys will last longer with out a dought but never be able to retrieve a sub key off a SUb without nukeing all the info off of it.

I have been testing birds for well over 15 years and i know a little bit about everything.

With the investment of one dish, 32+ they usualy come with a linier lnb you will be abe to start recievering some fta channels. Average cost is about 60-100$ CAN depending where you go. Keep in mind tho with only one dish and no motor you will be forced to watch only that one bird! :)

No worries jim. The more you play the better you learn. The first time i installed and setup a h-h motor i worked on it for 2 weeks to get all the angles right. As i adjusted it i got better and now i can do that whole insatal in 2-3 hours. I orginally started out with a cband re-writeing a digicypher eprom and the moved to carding writing tires on plastic. then to DSS rev card to avr / sub then atmega / then atmega 128 to rom 103 and 101.. Soon i grew tired of always unlooping card and fixing software in the recievers so i migrated to FTA and test 3 viewsat recievers. I still ahve some pansats in the basement right next to the fortecs. Testing is all about learning and expanding your knowledge.

Yes star choice is linier. Bac kin the day of the B3v switch b3v ran off of 24" linier birds. As b3v moved starchoice took over the old birds. B3v then handed out new lnb's to circular, for a couple of reasons. More power and smaller dish. You can use a starchoice lnb but the freq's on it are limited unlike a real universal FTA lnb.

BTW: forry for the delayed reply. I must have missed your post.. :)

Hi Team,
This is my first posting her and I found that thread is very nice. I would like to thank Archangle for the very informative history.
Now my question :). I did followed that strategy and installed a motorized Big dish (I think 32). with quad lnb 2 circular and 2 Liner. I can get dish (echo star 7, 8 and 3) I also can get nimiq 2 and may be nimiq 1 if I worked my alignement to a bit better that what it is now.
Following the strategy, I need to be able to point to FTA sat's and Liniar sat's I could not find any where enough information to help me setting myself.
I saw the FAQ about the FTA and though I will be able to find more information to help me finding those free channels. I really appreciate all the work programers do and I am a techie person/computer programmer but I do not know know where to start to help with programming too if I can volunteer.
Thanks for you to spent the time reading my message and will be happy to get your feed back.

No worries.. One of the best to aim to would be Galexy 10r. It has about 40-60 all english channels but when you start aiming to linier you MUST use a LNB skeq. On your dish, the very end wehre teh lnb holder is there is a bunch of numbers, deg's. IN my area i use -35 deg. To find out what you need in yer area please use this site.

http://satcalculator.freehostia.com/

Ever since the freezeing and b3v being down all the time i have setup more and more 33-36 inch setups for Gal. 10r. Keep in mind the programing is not PPV or prem. channels but a lot better then the pic freezeing every 5 mins!

I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction for setting up my dish 500 to my VS2000 Ultra. I live in atlanta GA witch is eastern time. I think I saw some angle calculation programs but, I can no longer find them and I get nothing except a black screen.
