I was having a problem with my Windows 7 not showing the right amount of RAM I had here's how I solve the problem:

1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Search programs and files box and enter.
2. In the System Configuration window click Boot and then click Advanced options.
3. Click to clear the Maximum memory check box, and then click OK.
4. Restart the computer.

This fixed my problem i hope it helps you!

I had the same problem when I first installed more than 4 gigs of RAM, it turned out it only stated I had 3.2 or 3.4 GB of RAM apparently has something to do with older bios not reporting to Windows the correct amount of RAM. In order to corrected I get a new motherboard. Apparently its one of the limitations of older motherboards.

The problem with your RAM you had is completely different than the problem that I had. Your problem is just what the computer industry refers to as obsolete equipment. Or is it built-in obsolescence? Regardless for more RAM have to upgrade the motherboard
