The Sims (1) running problem?

I got the Sims from a thrift store and I have a Windows xp. I installed the game fine but when I try to play it a little window pops up and says it has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. Some off the other things on this computer have been doing that lately so I'm wondering if its a problem with the game, my computer, or if its the fact that i have a XP. Ive been dying to play this game so if there is any thing I can do please tell me. Thanks
