CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands – The U.S. Virgin Islands is endorsing a proposal by the Environmental Protection Agency to take an old chemical factory off a Superfund list of heavily polluted sites.
Robert Mathes is head of the islands' Department of Planning and Natural Resources. He said Wednesday that the proposed delisting of the former Virgin Island Chemical Corp. plant in St. Croix comes after 12 years of hard cleanup work.
Contaminants including ethyl benzene and xylene had seeped into soil and groundwater at the former plant. But the EPA now says cleanup goals have been achieved at the site and the plant can safely be removed from the list.
Superfund is the name given to a U.S. program established to clean abandoned hazardous waste sites.
