JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – An underground fire at a mine at Velkom, in the northeast of South Africa, has killed 36 people who appeared to have been illegally mining for gold, miners union officials said Monday.

"Thirty-six died in the fire under the ground. It looks that they were illegal miners. It happened in the Free State yesterday afternoon," said Lesiba Seshoka of the National Union of Miners.

"Bodies have been rescued today. They are in a bad condition."
