WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- President Barack Obama paid tribute Saturday to U.S. law enforcement officers who provide a sense of security he said Americans often take for granted.
Saturday was Peace Officers Memorial Day.
In brief remarks from the west front lawn of the Capitol, Obama said Americans "rely on a certain order in our lives, a certain sense of security that lets us sleep safely in our beds," The Washington Post reported.
"Every day people go about their lives; they wake up, sit down for breakfast, send kids off to school, head into office or factory floor, and after an honest day's work they return home ready to do it all over again in the morning," Obama said.
"We often take it for granted this cycle of life. (However), chance can change everything overnight," he said, praising peace officers who have died in the line of duty.
In 2009, 116 U.S. law enforcement officials died while on duty, the lowest number since 1959, the Post said.
