National Geographic Bee opens in D.C
WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- Geography students in fifth through eighth grade competed in Washington Tuesday in the 22nd annual National Geographic Bee, organizers said.

The top prize for the national winner is a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, along with an all expenses-paid trip with a parent to the Galapagos Islands. The runner-up gets a $15,000 scholarship and the third-place finisher gets a $10,000 scholarship.

The Top 10 finalists at the end of Tuesday's competition stood to win $500 each -- and go to the final round Wednesday, which will be aired nationally on the National Geographic Channel. The final round will be hosted by "Jeopardy" host Alex Trebek, National Geographic said.

"National Geographic's mission is to inspire people to care about (the) planet. Through the National Geographic Bee and everything else we do at the society, we hope to foster a lifelong passion for learning about the wonders of the Earth and its diverse lands and cultures," National Geographic Society President and Chief Executive Officer John Fahey said.
