1 dead, 10 sick from tainted drugs at rave
DALY CITY, Calif., (UPI) -- One party-goer died and 10 others were sickened, five critically, apparently after taking tainted drugs at a huge rave in Daly City, Calif., police said.
Those who fell ill were among about 16,500 people who attended the POP 2010 The Dream festival Saturday night at the Cow Palace, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
The death was being investigated by city police as a homicide, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
"Obviously someone was either giving away or selling drugs that were laced with something that caused a number of kids to be taken to the hospital," said Eileen Shields, spokeswoman for the San Francisco Department of Public Health.
The Mercury News said Anthony Mata, 23, of Santa Clara died Sunday night after being rushed to a hospital. It said the five victims in critical condition were suffering from internal bleeding and kidney failure.
The newspaper said San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force officials confiscated 800 ecstasy pills, plus cocaine and methamphetamine at the event.
San Francisco Police Lt. Lyn Tomioka told the Chronicle investigators had not determined what drug was involved but that "ecstasy is usually associated with raves."
"It's very concerning with that many young people having to go to the hospital," she said. "That rave event is huge."
More than 70 people were arrested on suspicion of selling drugs during the event, the Chronicle said.
