Detroit school official admits lewd act
DETROIT, (UPI) -- Detroit school board President Otis Mathis wants to rescind his resignation after admitting he acted lewdly while talking to the district's superintendent.

Superintendent Teresa Gueyser accused Mathis of fondling himself for 20 minutes and then unzipping his pants during a conversation Wednesday, the Detroit Free Press reported. Mathis resigned Thursday but then Friday wrote a letter seeking to hold on to his education post while admitting to "inappropriate actions," the newspaper said.

"As you know, I have made inappropriate actions toward a professional employee of the board," he wrote. "I deeply regret my actions. I have apologized to the employee involved."

Mathis said attributed his behavior to medical issues. "I need to pursue treatment. ... I want to make sure that what happened doesn't ever happen again," he said.

Board member Carla Scott said Mathis is gone as far as she's concerned.

"It's over. He's done. We have more important business to handle," she said. "We can't afford a circus."

Board Vice President Anthony Adams said the board will post the position and fill it with someone from Mathis's district.
