3rd Filipino journalist killed in week
MANILA, Philippines, (UPI) -- A reporter for a newspaper in the Philippines has been shot dead, the third journalist killed in the country in less than a week, officials said.
Officials said Nestor Bedolido, who workrd for the weekly tabloid The Kastigador in Digos City, was buying cigarettes Saturday night from a roadside stand when a gunman shot him six times, The New York Times reported. He died on the way to the hospital.
Police said they were still trying to determine why he was killed.
He was the 140th Filipino journalist killed since democracy was restored in the country in 1986.
The National Union of Journalists Sunday denounced the killings and called on the president-elect, Benigno S. Aquino III, to end "the culture of impunity."
