19 hurt in Chicago subway fire
CHICAGO, (UPI) -- Fire broke out on Chicago's Red Line subway Sunday, leaving 19 people injured, officials said.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Richard Rosado said five of the injured had serious injuries, WGN-TV and the Chicago Tribune reported online.

One passenger, Andrew Schad, 23, said he never saw flames "but there was a lot of smoke."

"Visibility was really bad," he said.

Schad also said passengers "were given no instruction."

"We didn't really know what was going on," he said.

Fire officials said railroad ties caught fire shortly after 5 p.m.

"It's more common on the elevated trains," fire department spokesman Larry Langford said. "It's rare on the subway. But it does happen occasionally."

It took firefighters about an hour to control the fire and service on the line was restored by 8 p.m.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
