Police: Fired Mazda worker kills with car

HIROSHIMA, Japan, (UPI) -- A former Mazda employee killed one person and injured 11 Tuesday when he deliberately drove his car into groups of workers at a Japanese plant, police said.

The assaults took place at Mazda's headquarters factory in Hiroshima, the Mainichi Daily News reported. Police said Toshiaki Hikiji, who had been a temporary employee at Mazda, deliberately rammed his car into three separate groups of workers at different entrances about 7:30 a.m.

Police said Hikiji was stopped by police in Fuchu, about 3 miles from the factory. He allegedly had a knife in his car.

"I was planning to attack employees at the Mazda factory with the knife. I hit the workers with intention to kill," he allegedly told investigators. "Mazda fired me two months ago, and I had a grudge against the company. I was furious and desperate."

He was charged with attempted murder, which was upgraded to murder when police learned Hiroshi Hamada, 39, had died of his injuries.

Investigators said some of the other victims were seriously injured.
