Melee erupts on Nigeria's House floor

ABUJA, Nigeria, (UPI) -- A brawl erupted in the Nigerian House of Representatives, with several lawmakers sustaining injuries and 11 members being suspended, officials said.

The cause of Tuesday's fight stemmed from allegations of corruption leveled against House Speaker Dimeji Bankoli involving about $14.7 million, Radio France Internationale reported Wednesday.

During a recess, a group of lawmakers calling themselves "The Progressives" gave Bankoli two weeks to resign, the French broadcaster said. When the House returned to session, the group was suspended and ordered to leave the floor. They refused. The fight broke out when pro-Bankoli lawmakers tried to force the Progressives to leave the chamber.

The Progressives filed their allegations against the speaker with Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
