Sunderland says she will sail again
MARINA DEL REY, Calif., (UPI) -- Abby Sunderland, the Southern California teenager rescued at sea during an attempt to sail solo around the world, says she will "definitely" sail some more.
Meeting with reporters Tuesday at Marina del Rey, Calif., Sunderland, 16, described the storm that snapped the 60-foot mast off her 40-foot yacht Wild Eyes, leaving her adrift in the Pacific Ocean for two days until she was rescued June 12 by the crew of a French fishing vessel, the Los Angeles Times reported.
She said she was below, working on the engine after strong gales had subsided, when her sails caught a giant wave and the boat rolled upside-down and immediately righted. Sunderland said she blacked out for a moment and then went to check on the boat.
"When I got outside, there was nothing there," she said of her broken mast. "It was a 1-inch stub. There was nothing to jury-rig."
Sunderland said criticism of her parents for allowing her to attempt the voyage was "extremely hurtful."
"I have sailed 12,000 miles, and I'm proud of my achievements," she said. "The more I sail, the more I like sailing. I'm definitely going to do more."
Sunderland said her family would not participate in a TV show or documentary about her story but she said she is considering writing a book.
First, she said, she wants to finish high school and get her driver's license, the Times reported.
