Oregon police re-open Gore investigation
PORTLAND, Ore., (UPI) -- Police in Oregon say they have re-opened an investigation into a woman's allegation that former Vice President Al Gore made unwanted sexual contact with her.

The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office confirmed to The (Portland, Ore.) Oregonian last week investigators in 2009 looked into an accusation by a massage therapist that Gore had groped her in a hotel suite in 2006. Portland police issued a statement Wednesday saying the investigation was being re-opened.

"The Portland Police Bureau has made the decision to reopen the case regarding the allegations brought forward against Mr. Al Gore," the statement said. "Consistent with our policy regarding open investigations, the Police Bureau will not be commenting on any additional specifics regarding this case at this time."

Kalee Kreider, a spokeswoman for Gore, said in a statement a renewal of the investigation "will only benefit Mr. Gore," CNN reported.

"The Gores cannot comment on every defamatory, misleading and inaccurate story generated by tabloids," Kreider said. "Mr. Gore unequivocally and emphatically denied this accusation when he first learned of its existence three years ago. He stands by that denial."

The therapist gave police a statement in 2009 describing the alleged October 2006 incident at Hotel Lucia. Police had briefed prosecutors on the matter in late 2006 and early 2007, county District Attorney Michael Schrunk said in a statement last week.

"We were told the woman was not willing to be interviewed by the Portland Police Bureau and did not want a criminal investigation to proceed,'' the statement said.

The woman went to police again in January 2009 to renew her allegation but detectives concluded there was insufficient evidence to pursue the case, The Oregonian said. She called police in June to request a copy of her statement and indicated she wanted to amend it.

Gore and his wife Tipper announced last month they are separating after 40 years of marriage.
