Final Exit uses billboards for message

NEWARK, N.J., A group that advocates allowing seriously ill adults to arrange their own deaths has begun a billboard ad campaign in Florida, California and New Jersey.

The New Jersey sign is a large black billboard with the message "My Life My Death My Choice FinalExitNetwork.org," The Star-Ledger of Newark reports.

Bob Levine, 88, of Princeton, N.J., said he founded the New Jersey chapter after watching his first wife die from cancer.

"What we're trying to do is let people know that Final Exit Network exists, and that we're here, and if they spend a little time trying to find out what we do, they might actually support us," he said.

The group said the New York area and San Francisco were selected for billboards because of the number of people who would be open to Final Exit's message. Florida, where a sign has not yet gone up, also has a large elderly population.

Levine said the reaction has been mixed, with some callers thanking Final Exit and others accusing them of being atheists. Suicide prevention counselors have suggested the signs might push vulnerable teenagers over the edge, the newspaper reported.
