Israeli soldier, officer convicted
JERUSALEM, An Israeli soldier and his commanding officer were convicted Thursday in the firing of a rubber bullet at the feet of a blindfolded Palestinian prisoner.

A military tribunal on the Kirya base found Lt. Col. Omri Borberg, formerly an Armored Corps commander, guilty of attempted threats and unfit behavior, and former Staff Sgt. Leonardo Corea guilty of inappropriate use of a weapon and unfit behavior. Corea was a member of the military reserve who has since completed his service.

The July 7, 2008, incident occurred as soldiers responded to a protest in the village of Naalin on the West Bank by Palestinians and some Jewish supporters. The court found Corea fired at a man who had been both blindfolded and tied up.

Borberg was later removed from his military command. No penalty has yet been decided in the criminal case.

Ashraf Ibrahim Abu Rahma, the prisoner, testified during the trial.

"They need to sit many years in prison for what they did. I still don't understand the meaning of the decision and its implications, but it is certain that the punishment of the two must be severe," he said after the verdict.
