Tornado delays P.R. games
MAYGUEZ, Puerto Rico, A tornadic waterspout hit Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Saturday, forcing the postponement of the opening ceremony for a major sports competition, officials said.

San Juan's El Nuevo Dia newspaper reported the tornado left at least five people injured.

Despite damage to tents, the main stage and special effects equipment, the opening ceremony for the Central American and Caribbean Games Mayaguez 2010 will be held in Central Stadium at 5 p.m. Sunday, the San Juan newspaper Primera Hora reported.

Ceremony producer Hector Martinez said the storm destroyed several lighting towers and eight screens that were to be used in the show.

"We are adjusting," Martinez said. "The sound system is perfect and the artists are involved ... . We're fine, we must learn from this and [go] forward."

Stadium workers, police and National Guardsmen were pressed into service to clean up twisted metal and other mess left behind by the high winds, El Nuevo Dia said.
