61 dogs seized from Canadian home
WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Dozens of dogs rescued from a home in rural Manitoba were in poor health, provincial animal protection officials say.

Winnipeg Humane Society Chief Executive Officer Bill McDonald told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Saturday it was a case of "animal hoarding." McDonald said most of the 61 dogs seized Friday were mature animals living in squalor that included feces and urine. The dogs were living in a building separate from the owners' living quarters, he said.

Forty-four of the dogs were taken to a shelter in Winnipeg and 17 went initially to a rural shelter, the CBC said. Three of the animals had to be put down, one because of bite wounds and two others because they were too dangerous for staff to handle, the network said.

"We have dealt with some nasty situations, not of this volume though," McDonald said. "This is the largest of this degree of neglect."

The dogs were being checked out by veterinarians, said McDonald, who added an investigation was under way to determine whether charges should brought against the owners.
