Biden says Pelosi most powerful

PHILADELPHIA, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden downplayed his boss's political clout Monday, proclaiming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the nation's most powerful politician.

Biden, in Philadelphia for a fundraiser, made the comment after U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pa., called the California Democrat "the most powerful woman in American politics."

Biden subsequently upped the ante, ranking Pelosi above President Barack Obama, CQ-Roll Call reported.

"I would rephrase that: the most powerful person in American politics," Biden said when he got his turn to address the crowd. "The single most successful, the single most persuasive, the single most strategic leader I have ever worked with is Nancy Pelosi."

Biden, Schwartz and Pelosi were among the movers and shakers on hand for the campaign event for Bryan Lentz, the Democratic candidate running to replace Rep. Joe Sestak, D-Pa., who is leaving the House to run for the U.S. Senate.
