2 Japanese TV journalists die on mountain

SAITAMA, Japan, Two Japanese television journalists climbing a mountain to reach the site of a fatal helicopter crash were found dead Sunday, police confirmed.

The two Nippon Television Network Corp. journalists were identified as reporter Yuji Kita, 30, and cameraman Jun Kawakami, 43, Kyodo News reported.

Authorities said bad weather Monday forced them to halt their investigation into the deaths.

The journalists' guide, Takanobu Mizuno, said he had tried to get Kita and Kawakami to give up their attempt to climb the mountain in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, Saturday morning because they were under-dressed, Kyodo said. The pair went ahead on their own, he said.

The journalists' employer asked police to begin a search when they failed to return by 6 p.m. Saturday.

The pair were found more than a mile from the site of the July 25 helicopter crash in which five people died. The helicopter was on a mission to rescue a 55-year-old woman who had fallen into the basin of a waterfall. She was later confirmed dead.
