More violent protests rock Kashmir

BUDGAM, India, Eight people were killed and 67 injured Monday in a fourth day of clashes between separatists and security forces in Indian-administered Kashmir, police say.

An unnamed police spokesman said four people were killed when mobs attacked police facilities, and railway and government property in north and south Kashmir, CNN reported Monday.

Another person died in Sangam in south Kashmir, with locals saying the victim was beaten by security forces but officials blaming a stampeding mob.

A sixth victim was an 8-year-old boy in Batmallo, who died of injuries suffered in another stampede.

A seventh victim died Monday after being injured the day before in Bijbehera in south Kashmir and the eighth victim was a youth killed by police who fired into a rock-throwing mob in south Kashmir's Kulgam, the police spokesman said.

The violence became inflamed Friday when four protesters were killed and more than 70 injured in clashes between stone-throwing demonstrators and Indian security forces. More died through the weekend.

Protesters from the Muslim-majority area of Kashmir are seeking independence from India and have been under a sporadic curfew.

State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah issued a public appeal to abide by around-the-clock curfew restrictions thereby helping his government restore calm.

"I am not happy with frequent curfews, but human life matters more than the human movement," Abdullah said.

People in areas affected by the curfew allegedly are facing shortages of baby food, vegetables, bread and other essentials, CNN said.
