2 police officers killed in Alaska

HOONAH, Alaska, -- A gunman suspected of killing two police officers in Hoonah, Alaska, was holed up Sunday in his home in the village, authorities said.
Hoonah Police Sgt. Tony Wallace, 32, and officer Matt Toruoka, 39, were fatally wounded when ambushed Saturday night, Bob Prunella, the village's acting city administrator, told the Anchorage Daily News.
Prunella said he didn't know what led up to the shootings.
Alaska state troopers said the suspect, who they identified as John Marvin Jr., 45, was still barricaded in his home Sunday afternoon and law enforcement officers were evacuating nearby residences while negotiators tired to bring the situation to a conclusion without further bloodshed, the Daily News said.
George Martin, Tokuoka's father-in-law, told the newspaper his son-in-law was off-duty in his car with his wife and two young children and talking to Wallace, who was on duty and standing outside the vehicle, when the shooting started.
Wallace's mother, a nurse who was visiting from Florida, was nearby and saw her son shot, Prunella said.
Hoonah is a community of about 800 people in southeastern Alaska.
