Police warn Chicago gang leaders
CHICAGO, -- Chicago police law enforcement officers say they have met with neighborhood gang leaders to tell them they will be held responsible for violence.
Police Superintendent Jody Weis and federal prosecutors met secretly this month with a group of West Side gang leaders at the Garfield Park Conservatory, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Over snacks and beverages, officials told the gang leaders they would be held directly liable for shootings and other violent crimes committed by their gang members.
Weis told a Saturday new conference if a crime is traced to gang, law enforcement will "come down with every bit of firepower we have, every prosecutive trick we know." Racketeering laws and parole violations also would be used.
He said investigators tried to make the meeting congenial, but the gang leaders, mainly from the Trinity Vice Lords, "got up and walked out."
