Mail carrier found boy, 2, crying in apartment

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) - A mother accused of leaving her 2-year-old child home alone in their Central Falls apartment pleaded not guilty at her arraignment Thursday morning.

The judge set bail for Nicole Lassiter, 24, at $500 and also ordered she have no contact with the child unless supervised by the Department of Children, Youth and Families.

According to prosecutors, a mail carrier called police after hearing a child crying incessantly inside the Central Falls home.

Officers knocked on the door. When no one answered, firefighters forced their way inside, where police said they found the child alone, wearing only a diaper.

It was revealed during Lassiter's arraignment that she was in Boston at the time.

The child is currently in state custody.

Lassiter has a bail hearing set for next Wednesday.
