GILFORD, N.H. -- It was a long cold day for 29 hikers lost on Mount Belknap in Gilford on Saturday.

The members of the Chinese Bible Church of Greater Boston called for help at about 4:45 p.m. from the Blue Trail.

When rescuers with the Gilford Fire Department arrived, about 12 hikers from the group were located in a residence keeping warm.

Gilford's Fire and Rescue crews then received a cell phone call from a group of seven of the lost hikers who were at the Blue Trail boulder field.

The hikers were told to stay put because a rescue team was heading to their location, but officials said the group hiked back toward the fire tower. Ten more hikers were able to find their way down just before nightfall.

More than a dozen hikers were transported to the Gilford Fire Department for medical evaluation and to get warmed up.

The Gilford Fire and Rescue command post then received another call from the last group of 9 lost hikers stating they had made it back to the fire tower on top of Mt. Belknap.

Due to darkness and drop in temperatures, this group stayed on the Red Trail until the rescue team found them and helped them off the mountain by about 7:45 p.m.

Just before the hikers headed home, Gilford safety officials said the group was told to remember to have a trail map, water, food, proper footwear and know the area where they hike before they set out again.
